Customer Highlight: The Greater Washington Community Foundation

The Greater Washington Community Foundation launched their mySidewalk data dashboard as a part of the VoicesDMV initiative on December 8, 2017. The story below highlights their vision, challenges, and how they are using this dashboard to create one data-driven resource that engages the entire DMV community.

What is VoicesDMV?
VoicesDMV (D.C., Maryland, Virginia) is a community engagement initiative of the Greater Washington Community Foundation (GWCF) in partnership with the Urban Institute.

What is the goal for VoicesDMV?
To ensure targeted investments in areas of greatest need, the foundation surveyed Washington area residents about the region’s strengths, challenges, and overall quality of life. The goal of the VoicesDMV dashboard is to be the “go-to” resource for members of the private and public sectors, policymakers, and residents to learn about and track the region’s progress on top-of-mind issues.

What challenges were they facing?
GWCF worked with the Urban Institute to administer surveys and collect community feedback during public meetings. They planned to produce a PDF report of the survey results, but they also wanted to give stakeholders a way to interact with the data, so everyone could dive into the jurisdictions and issues they cared about most.

However, creating engaging and sophisticated data visualizations - particularly with geospatial data - is difficult for a small team on a limited budget. The GWCF also wanted a way to integrate additional data - including quantitative demographic and socioeconomic data - to complement the qualitative data and show both the perception and reality of residents’ experiences.

What was the solution?
mySidewalk teamed up with Gallup to help the GWCF tell the story of the Washington area. By combining data from the VoicesDMV survey, Gallup U.S. Daily survey, American Community Survey 5-year estimates, and other sources, GWCF was able to find and share meaningful insights about the area’s five jurisdictions. By communicating baseline measures of well-being, economic security, social inclusion, and resident priorities in an interactive dashboard, they’re enabling a diverse set of stakeholders to work together to improve the region.

We needed our data to tell a vivid story. That meant something interactive that would attract interest. mySidewalk built something dynamic and engaging. mySidewalk made our story come to life.
— Manon Matchett, Community Investment Officer at the Greater Washington Community Foundation

What does this solution look like?
In addition to providing a population overview and comparison of the five DMV jurisdictions, the VoicesDMV dashboard highlights the survey categories of well-being, economic security, social inclusion, and making change happen. Each one of these sections incorporates resident survey data and mixes in other relevant data for deeper community insight. See a few examples below.
